The Nomadic Village is a 2-week settlement of artists from all over the world whose works look at themes of nomadism; artists who in their practice respond to and interact with places and people; artists who intentionally displace themselves to seek encounters that not only influence their work but form it; artists who create situations.
The nomadic artists’ mobile homes/ateliers form the structure of the Village around On The Road Productions’ (ORP) Steyr-Ikarus bus, which acts as its townhall. In this autonomous enviroment participants can freely experiment with new ways of working; it stimulates creativity and exchange, and attracts local people to observe and participate in the process. At the end of the Village there is a public exhibition/show that invites a wider audience to appreciate the works produced during the Village.
The project Praise of Slowness by Davide Bignami with Pedro Bianchini is a 650 km journey from Italy to France with the smallest possible mobile home built on a Piaggio Ape 50cc tricycle. A 1985 Ford Transit motorhome joined the trip for the inevitable road movie filmed along the way. A travelling silkscreen workshop was set up in the village to print on demand t-shirts to promote the nomadic stance.
An apecamper is an oxymoron. It’s a moped, the typical vehicle driven by someone who doesn’t need to leave his/her daily path, and at the same time a motorhome, the symbol of comfortable, technological and independent travel. Bystanders will watch you drive by with intrigued looks on their faces. There’s a comical aspect in a journey by apecamper because it’s a funny looking tricycle and it is odd to see it approaching a curve at full “speed” or doing a U turn in just about a meter. There’s also a poetical side to it, since in the “living cell” of this inadequate vehicle you are carrying your own belongings, your private space, your intimacy.
Praise of slowness is just an ironic title, whereas the main idea in this project is inadequacy, it’s the sense of one’s own limits. You can experience slowness by walking, cycling or in many other ways. During this journey slowness was a limit that made distances seem enormous. Soon it was clear that it was not a matter of taking it easy, relaxing, wasting time… It was my vehicle being slow, not me, and I had to deal with this limit in traffic, up hills, in choosing the way. So if we obviously ruled out highways from the beginning, then busy roads as well, if it was no longer a matter of time and the path didn’t need to be the shortest, then it might as well be the nicest.
