Metanationale is an artist-group founded 2006, which investigates the roots of racism within the occidental culture by examining the structures of hierarcical power of western society. Metanationale is founded to give artists of colour a voice and a platform to structure the art-theorical approach to the racial theme in the art fields. The goal is try to break the silence and transform it into action and language.
"Art has always been the site of social and political power struggles. It has the capacity to defi ne or question existing power structures through representation. This can in turn infl uence how we as individuals are positioned, and position ourselves, in society. Simultaneously, social hierarchies within the art world defi ne whose voices are heard and whose are silenced. Although and sometimes precisely because artists of Color have very limited access to established cultural institutions, art can function as a means of protest and resistance. With their work, artists of Color can produce new, self-defi ned images, beyond White cultural ascriptions, and give these often marginalized perspectives greater visibility in society. With the lecture series Re / Positionierung – Critical Whiteness / Perspectives of Color, we attempted to create a space within the Berlin art world, where racism, Critical Whiteness and perspectives of Color, with a particular reference to the reading of art history and contemporary art practice, could be discussed and refl ected upon. (...) The reaction we received to our open call from artists working with various media from all over the world showed us how relevant these issues are, issues that cross national borders. The contributions in Re/Positionierung demonstrate different approaches to dealing with dominant power structures that have developed over generations. These power structures are constantly being reformed, and via artistic representation, inscribe themselves into collective world views. (...)" Sandrine Micossé Re-Positionierung / Metanationale 2009)
